Visiting New York City on Positive Waves was definitely a bucket list item for all of us. The kids had never been, Hans and I hadn't been for over 15 years. We splurged and stayed in a slip at a marina in Brooklyn, just across the East River from Manhattan. The views were outstanding.
Sailing down the East River, through Hell's Gate (that part of the East
River where it gets really narrow and the current is raging), along the
east side of Manhattan and circling around the Statue of Liberty was
outstanding. We took turns sitting on the foredeck pointing out all the
different buildings, helicopters, people jogging, everything!
We spent a few days at the marina and rode the subway over to Manhattan every day. We tried not to pack too much stuff into each day, but we stayed busy nonetheless. While the kids and I wore our best boat clothes on a daily basis, Hans stuck with his tried and true board shorts. We drew the line, however, when he wanted to wear them to the Broadway show, Aladdin. He grumbled and complained, but eventually gave in and wore his only pair of jeans. Paired with an aloha shirt, he still looked like a sailor. No board shorts on Broadway!
We didn't visit any museums since we had a trip to Washington DC lined up in a few weeks, but instead we did things like rent bicycles in Central Park, walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, went to FAO Schwartz and the Harry Potter store, and met friends in Central Park for an afternoon. We found a great French restaurant in Brooklyn and Matilda had sushi on the upper west side.
